Alabama House District 65 is holding a special election on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 to fill the seat vacated by Marc Keahey, D-Grove Hill, who won a Senate seat in June. The special election will be between Democrat Elaine Beech, who easily won the Democratic Primary in September, and Republican Jerry Reed who was unopposed.
Alabama House District 65 includes all of Washington County, and parts of Clarke and Choctaw Counties. Beech, age 49 from Chatom, currently sits on the Washington County school board. Reed, 67, has never held public office and is a retired insurance agent, school teacher, and principal.
Election polling locations will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. and you must be a registered Alabama voter to vote in this special election.
Starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Dixie Harley Davidson shop in Pelham, Alabama is the annual Ride for Rett bike ride. What exactly is Rett Syndrome? It's a devastating neurological disease primarily affecting young girls and women. Girls with Rett Syndrome cannot talk, many cannot walk, and most are unable to even use their hands. In short, they require total care from parents or care-givers.
All riders and bikers are encouraged to join the ride, which will benefit the Southeastern Rett Syndrome Alliance, The Rett Syndrome Center at UAB, and the International Rett Syndrome Foundation. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the $25 per bike fee will go to directly benefit these organizations. The ride starts at 10:00 AM and ends at approximately 12:30 PM, at Veteran’s Park in Alabaster.

The annual Rockford Town and Country Holiday Market is an indoor festival filled with a variety of interesting vendors of arts, crafts, gifts, vintage and new jewelry, antiques, and holiday decor. The event runs through Saturday afternoon, with storytelling for children by Dr. Jeff Fuller, author of Sam Comes to Rockford. Entertainment for the entire family will be held throughout the event.

Nearly 200 soldiers from Alabama's 158th Maintenance Company are scheduled to arrive today at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. The 158th, out of Tuskegee, has been stationed in Northern Iraq since last December. The unit was responsible for the maintenance and repair of vehicles in convoys that were supporting military operations in the area. The unit will most likely be returning to loved ones in Alabama this weekend.
Several weeks ago Guard soldiers attached to the 115th Integrated Theater Signal Battalion returned home from a mission in Iraq. Later this month approximately 250 soldiers with the 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command from Homewood are scheduled to finalize their field training before deploying to Afghanistan.
Presently, the Alabama National Guard has more than 1,600 soldiers and airmen deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan helping to keep America and the world safe from terrorist attacks.
