HandsOn Greater Huntsville, Alabama wants you and your family to join them for Family Volunteer Day on Saturday, November 21, 2009!
Family Volunteer Day is a day of service designed to demonstrate the power of families who choose to volunteer together, and to support the communities in which they live. This special day provides local families with an opportunity to spend quality time together, teach important life skills to children, give back to the community, and motivate families to make volunteering a year-round habit.
This year, HandsOn is offering many great activities for families with children of all ages. Participants will gather for a breakfast reception to meet their volunteer groups before dispersing to their project site.
Those interested will meet at the Huntsville main library, located at 915 Monroe Street, at 9:30am on Saturday, November 21, 2009,and should plan on staying until noon. All volunteers will receive group assignments and directions at the breakfast reception.

On Thursday and Friday, November 19th and 20th, flutist, Dr. Claudia Anderson, will be visiting Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Anderson is from the Rocky Ridge Music Center in Estes Park, Colorado, and will be holding live auditions for summer programs. The Center is located at the foot of Longs Peak (14,256 ft.) in the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Anderson, on the music faculty of Grinnell College in Iowa, performs and teaches for the Young Artist Seminar (ages 15-24) and Junior Student Seminars (ages 10-15) at Rocky Ridge during the summer. Dr. Anderson will address the student body on Thursday at 3:15pm to talk about Rocky Ridge and answer general questions about its programs. This will be followed by a master class for Prof. Kim Scott's flute studio at 3:45pm, during which time Dr. Anderson will perform Frank Martin's Ballade.
Any ASFA student, ages 10-24, interested in learning more about Rocky Ridge, and auditioning for Dr. Anderson, should please contact Professor Kim Scott to sign up for a time on the 20th.
There’s no question that you are already familiar with the rich and storied history of Tuskegee, Alabama. Come join the celebration this weekend as the city prepares itself for a great future. The Tuskegee Main Street Development Foundation presents a fundraiser like none that have ever come before, as it tells the story of this great city while raising money to preserve its historic properties.
On November 13th and 14th, you will see Tuskegee like never before! You’re invited to come and experience the lifestyle, culture, and of course our great stories of Tuskegee. On Saturday, November 14th visitors will be able to tour the historic and unique homes and buildings that are generously being opened by private owners for viewing. In addition to visiting these private spaces, there’s an exciting day of adventure from fun events on the town square, an exciting game with historic characters being portrayed about town, and activities provided by local museums.

Spend your Veterans Day at the annual Veterans Day Parade in Mobile. The day begins with a free, 100-plus unit Veterans and Military Appreciation Parade beginning at 10:00am, weaving its way through downtown Mobile, followed at noon with a Veterans Appreciation Luncheon held at Fort Whiting Auditorium. The Patriot of the Year and Mobile Area Veteran of the Year are honored at this event.
At 3:00pm at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, a Freedom Celebration will be held free of charge, featuring a parade of American flags by Mobile's school children. The day concludes with a free Patriotic Concert by the Mobile Pops Band surrounded by historic aircraft from the past 7 decades in the Aircraft Pavilion at Battleship Memorial Park.
The Whole Backstage Theatre will present a workshop designed for the high school student interested in learning everything to takes to prepare for a performing arts scholarship audition. The workshop will be held at the Whole Backstage Theatre in Guntersville from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 6th, and against on Saturday, November 7th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Over the past three decades the Whole Backstage Community Theatre has produced a wide range of quality shows, and has helped many aspiring actors advance their careers. The WBS is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, and is the only community theatre in Marshall County, Alabama. It exists solely through the generous support of its patrons.
