Court officials say a Birmingham, Alabama woman who recently changed her name to Jesus Christ didn’t live up to it when she reported for jury. The woman, previously Dorothy Lola Killingworth, was sent to Judge Clyde Jones’s courtroom to be a jury member for a criminal case.
Court officials said the 59-year-old was excused because she was disruptive and kept asking questions instead of answering them. Court administrator Sandra Turner said people there were shocked when the woman insisted her name was Jesus Christ. Some potential jurors even laughed out loud when her name was called.
Interestingly enough, it wasn’t a dodge or ploy to get out of jury duty. Turner said that unlike some Jefferson County residents, she didn’t try to get out of jury duty and was perfectly happy to serve.
I guess it takes all sorts. Maybe she should try her hand in another official building on Sundays.
Mobile Alabama's Mardi Gras is the oldest annual carnival celebration in the United States, having begun in 1703. The city of New Orleans was not founded until 1718.
French Catholic settlers brought the Fat Tuesday festival with them to their new Alabama home. Mardi Gras in Mobile evolved into a multi-week celebration that takes in the area's many cultures and even allows official school holidays on the last Monday and Tuesday no matter what one's religious affiliation.
Much like New Orleans' festivities, Mobile holds masked balls, dances and parades. Assorted clubs and bars create their own special events to help draw in the crowds.
When most people hear the name "Mardi Gras" they most likely think of the infamous activities in New Orleans. The fact that Mobile, Alabama was the frontrunner for this long-held celebration, and that it continues to hold events that rival the festivities in Louisiana, is likely news to a lot of folks!
Have you seen the YouTube clip with Alabama's resident sword swallower, Dan Meyer, swallowing a blade from a pair of Home Depot hedge clippers?
Well, it's not so much 'swallowing' as it is sliding the full length blade down his throat, but aside from such petty technicalities it's a little gruesome. Definitely NOT something to try at home, kids.
Not sure if the Alabama HD clerk was in on the joke, but Meyer's excuse for returning the implement was that they "tasted funny". The clip's really a bit more entertaining if you turn the audio off.
One mom in Albertville, Alabama doesn't value her daughter very much; the adult female was charged with child endangerment last fall when she had her daughter ride outside, on top of their van, to secure a cardboard box.
The 37 year-old mother argued with police that the box was safe because it was held on to the van by a coat hanger. She further explained to the Albertville Police officer who pulled her over that the package was too large to fit inside the van and that her daughter was simply inside the box to hold it down.
Yet more evidenced that some people should be tested before they're allowed to reproduce. Fortunately the little girl is safe and (maybe not so fortunate) the mother, after a brief time in jail, was released on parole.
Jeffrey Paulk believes in downtown Montgomery, Alabama so much that he not only moved his business there, but also built a place for his wife's shop and will soon live there.
It’s all part of a plan by an assortment of busi¬nesses, property owners, de¬velopers, and realtors to bring people and dollars to the Catoma Street neighbor¬hood in central Montgomery. Paulk, who owns Paulk Construction, said it was im¬portant for him to show a commitment to the area if he was going to try to sell others on his vision. He’s converting part of the building that houses his of¬fice into a two-bedroom apartment, where he and his wife will live.
Jerome Moore, a realtor with Coldwell Banker Com¬mercial, is handling many of the transactions and said the area has the potential to ex¬pand the vibrant part of downtown. Moore said the city of Montgomery holds the key to the entire project with a piece of land bounded by Cat¬oma Street, Bell Street and Molton Street. The site serves as overflow parking for the Renaissance, but is part of several scenarios for development of the neigh¬borhood.
You can do your part to revitalize your Montgomery neighborhood by starting a block watch and a neighborhood security and crime awareness plan. Installing a home security alarm system from ADT Security is a great start, complete with window sticker and yard signs showing that your neighborhood takes crime prevention seriously
